Rankin (geb. John Rankin Waddell, Glasgow, 1966) ist ein britischer Fotograf, Verleger und Filmregisseur, dessen Werk seit den frühen 1990er Jahren die zeitgenössische Fotografie, die Modefotografie und die kulturelle Porträtfotografie geprägt hat.
Rankin wurde als Mitbegründer des Magazins „Dazed & Confused“ zusammen mit Jefferson Hack zu einer Schlüsselfigur der britischen visuellen Kultur. Die Publikation entwickelte sich zu einer einflussreichen Plattform für experimentelle Fotografie und jugendorientierte Kulturproduktion. Das Verlagswesen spielt in seiner Arbeit nach wie vor eine zentrale Rolle, sei es durch die Magazine „AnOther“, „AnOther Man“ und das 2011 gegründete „HUNGER“ oder durch mehr als 40 Fotomonografien, die unabhängig sowie bei teNeues und Rizzoli NY erschienen sind.
Rankins Schaffen ist in der Porträtfotografie verwurzelt. Er hat Persönlichkeiten aus Musik, Film, Mode und dem öffentlichen Leben fotografiert, darunter David Bowie, Dua Lipa, Madonna, Jay-Z, Kelis, Zendaya, Idris Elba, die Rolling Stones und Königin Elizabeth II. Im Jahr 2023 fotografierte er König Charles III. für The Big Issue anlässlich des 75. Geburtstags des Königs.
Seine Arbeiten wurden international in Institutionen wie dem Museum of Modern Art in New York und der National Portrait Gallery in London ausgestellt und sind Teil der Sammlung des Victoria & Albert Museum.

Rankin (born John Rankin Waddell, Glasgow, 1966) is a British photographer, publisher, and film director whose work has shaped contemporary photography, fashion imagery, and cultural portraiture since the early 1990s.
Rankin emerged as a key figure in British visual culture as the co-founder of Dazed & Confused magazine with Jefferson Hack. The publication became an influential platform for experimental photography and youth-led cultural production. Publishing remains central to his practice through AnOther, AnOther Man, and HUNGER magazine, founded in 2011, and through more than 40 photographic monographs published independently and with teNeues and Rizzoli NY.
Rankin’s practice is rooted in portraiture. He has photographed figures from music, film, fashion, and public life including David Bowie, Dua Lipa, Madonna, Jay-Z, Kelis, Zendaya, Idris Elba, The Rolling Stones, and Queen Elizabeth II. In 2023, he photographed King Charles III for The Big Issue to mark the King’s 75th birthday.
His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the National Portrait Gallery, London, and is held in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection.
